Situated in Agra, India, the Taj Mahal is a magnificent mausoleum built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture, which is heavily influenced by Islamic art and design, including its grand domes, minarets, detailed marble inlays, and exquisite calligraphy.

Inscriptions

  • Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim (بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ):

    • "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."

    La ilaha illallah, Muhammadur Rasulullah (لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ):

    • "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah."

    Alhamdulillah (ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ):

    • "All praise is due to Allah."

  • Salamun Alaykum (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ):

    • "Peace be upon you."

    Subhanallah (سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ):

    • "Glory be to Allah."

    Insha'Allah (إنْ شَاءَ ٱللَّٰهُ):

    • "If Allah wills."

  • Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ):

    • "Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."

    Al-Fatiha (الفاتحة):

    • The opening chapter of the Quran, often recited in prayers and inscriptions.

    Masha'Allah (مَا شَاءَ ٱللَّٰهُ):

    • "What Allah has willed."

  • Jannah (جنة):

    • "Paradise" or "Heaven."

    Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghiran (رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًۭا):

    • "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."

    Allahumma ighfirli walidayya (اللَّهُمَّ ٱغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ):

    • "O Allah, forgive me and my parents."

Symbolism

  • Crescent and Star:

    Shahada (Declaration of Faith):
